This week I would like to revisit and do a follow up of a previous posting. In the past I have posted a picture of the Lawrence and Mary Jane Estrem home on University Avenue. Later I posted a photo showing that home and homes on either side after being demolished. Now today thanks to a photo taken by Mary & Tom Estrem we will see an image of the new building being built in the place where our childhood home used to be located. This picture had to be taken from the car as there is presently much street construction taking place with the new light rail line that will go right by our old house. My understanding is the first phase of the new light rail started near our state capital building and goes all the way up University avenue to the St. Paul, Minneapolis border. Now this new phase starts again on University avenue near KSTP TV and runs down to the Washington avenue bridge through the University of Minnesota campus. I believe Tom told me much of the work on the Washington bridge was done ahead of this new phase of construction. It is interesting to me that when we lived there in the 1940's we had street cars for many years and then they changed to city buses and now we will have a light rail system. I also remember the rapid transit burning off some of the old street cars near the rapid transit garage in the midway district where the midway shopping center is now.
Photo #1: New building being constructed on our old home site. Below ground will be a car garage. Street level will be retail space. Upper level will be apartments.
Photo #2: The original house at 3024 University Avenue S.E. Minneapolis.
